Artist Statement

For this series of artwork and products, I have worked around the idea of loss and depression. This idea originated from the loss of my grandmother 6 years ago.
This event has drastically changed my way of seeing things. It made me realize how powerful one’s departure could be and how it could bring such sorrow to another’s life. Therefore, I wanted to depict all these complicated and contradictory feelings I had gone through and learnt at the time. I worked both abstractly and representationally. I have worked with various mediums and materials, specifically, acrylic paint, sumi ink, charcoal and graphite, and the manipulation of paper. I chose to work with a contrast of light and dark colors. The dark colors convey concepts of sadness, darkness, and melancholy and the lighter, dreamier colors explore the positive memories and emotions that she brings up in me.
